This is Ethel looking for bugs around a chopped up tree stump. Chickens just love to scratch for the creepy crawlies! It's good protein for them and it gives them a chance for exercise. When the ground is frozen, I scatter uncooked rice for them to hunt.
This was taken the other day when the sun was out. Ethel never liked the rain or snow. She only likes to get her feet wet in a puddle during the summer when it it really hot out. Lucy is just the opposite - nothing bothers her.
Mostly about my backyard chickens. (Boring, I know), but there are a lot of us out here. Mine are only kept as pampered pets. I could eat a neighbor's chicken, but not MINE. There may be a comment on current events only if I get riled up enough. And there will always be a cartoon or a joke to cheer us. I promise to try my very best to respond to comments. Now I have to figure out how this blogger thingy works....
I was under the impression uncooked rice would kill a bird ?
ReplyDeleteNot at all Mamahen - mine have been eating it for years! It's not nutritious for a main diet, but having it as a treat is just fine. I keep the rice in a canning jar and when I shake that jar, they come running from all over. In the winter when it is bitter cold out, I even cook them a little bit of plain oatmeal.
DeleteAnimals are like people; they all have their own personalities.
ReplyDeleteThat's what makes them so much fun to watch - even as chicks you can tell they are all different!
