  1. Looking for high fat, high protein treats! Let her!

Our henhouse (this was 60 years ago, mind...) had a dirt floor that we relaid with straw once a week. Only about once a year did it get hoed out and we started again. It provided warmth, and food for the hens who constantly poked around in it.

This was in Canada and anything that made it warmer was a plus. Snow up over the windows on the (I remember, I think) North West side of the house. So anything that provided warmth for the animals was probably MOST appreciated. The men had to dig a path to the cow-barn, and of course to the chicken shed so we could get in for any eggs that might get laid out of season, to let the hens out a bit and to give them some feed.

Long time ago for this 65 year old. Good memories, only good memories of that time. All the Aunts and Uncles were really Great Aunts and Uncles, thus more like grandparents to me than authority figures! They all said I was a 'good kid' who did what she was told. Perhaps I had them fooled!

Fair Winds Chickenmom! love the blog.

    1. It gets mighty cold here in the winter, too. I pack down the coop to keep it warm and only remove the obvious poopsies. Some days they just stayed in the coop because they don't like to get their feet wet, But Maude and Sophia have never seen snow - should be fun! We keep a light on for heat when it gets bitter cold. Charlie usually winds up with some frostbite on his wattles, though. I just hope this winter is not as bad as it was last year! Poor Hubby had to plow a path many a day!
