Easy Listening for a Sunday Afternoon

Frankie Lane

That's My Desire

To spend one night with you
In our old rendezvous
And reminisce with you
That's my desire

To meet where gypsies play
Down in that dim cafe
And dance till break of day
That's my desire

We'll sip a little glass of wine
And I'll gaze into your eyes divine
I'll feel the touch of your lips
Pressing on mine

To hear you whisper low
Just when it's time to go
"Cheri, I love you so"
"You're my desire"

>instrumental interlude>

To hear you whisper low
Just when it's time to go
"Cheri, I love you so"
"You're my desire"

You're my desire...

  1. What is that? You can actually understand the words. Where are the stressed guitars and angry drums? How about a "singer" who sounds like he just caught on fire? Love it! They used to actually sing to please the ear:)

    1. Isn't that a lovely tune? Such great music back then. Would be wonderful if it ever made a comeback. Glad you liked it, too!

  2. Just wow... I grew up listening to Frankie Lane (My Dad's favorite - he particularly loved his 'Western' album), and others, mostly from the earlier years. There was a collection of 78's in our basement.

I may have told the story before, and nothing is so tedious as a twice told tale, but it is a good one, and maybe worth the retelling...

When my father was 95 and his kidneys had failed and other organs were following the slow cascade, his mind was still sharp as ever. He spent his last 3 days in Hospice. I would bring Mom there every morning at 8, and she and Dad would have breakfast together, then lunch then supper. She never would leave until Dad had gone to sleep for the night. It was a nice nursing facility, very home like, and welcoming to me and Mom during Dad's end time....

There was a local band that would come in every week on Friday to play dance music from the 30's and 40's. I asked Dad if he'd like to go down to the cafeteria hall to listen for a while and he surprised me and said yes. So we bundled Dad into a wheelchair, and Mom and I took him down. We were there for the full hour, Mom and Dad smiling and holding hands as always... At one point I asked Dad if he was getting too tired, but he smiled and said "no, Jannie, your mother and I danced miles to this music".

I believe that if he could have, he would have gotten up and danced a few more miles with Mumma. Alas, we lost him that night. But it remains with me whenever I hear 'Stardust Memories', "That's my Desire" or another song from their dancing years.

So once again, thanks for the memories, particularly this one.

P.S. You may know the song, "Dance with my Father Again" by Luther Van Dross. Never fails to make me cry, but these days, Dad 13 years he's been gone, it can now make me smile.

    1. What a wonderful story, Cap'n Jan! My Dad was in hospice, also. Mom was too ill to visit, so I spend all the free time I had with him. Just the two of us. He wasn't aware of anything around him - even me. He died while I was holding his hands. It's been almost twenty years now and I still miss him terribly. That lovely song bought tears to my eyes, too. We both are very lucky to have had such special Dads.

    2. Yes we were lucky... I'd love one more dance, just one more dance with my father again...

P.S. We'll probably ever meet in person, but there is a bit of my spirit that reaches out from Texas to touch someone special in New Jersey ;->

    3. And just to hear his laughter. One more time. Funny how the Internet CAN connect different people with each other. :o)

    1. Love that sound - grew up listening to the radio. Music was always on!
Still play the Big Bands as background music on the laptop! :o)
