Can anyone explain these formations?

  1. I think it means there's a lot of wind higher up. Often, that wind comes to ground level a few hours later. That's why the old saying, "Mare's tails and mackerel scales make tall ships carry low sails."

  2. Gorges - and Chickenmom - I have never heard that before, in all my years of sailing... And being around sailors. But it does, in fact, make sense. I was going to post 'Mackerel sky', which is what those first few pictures are. The clouds come about by being 'tumbled' by cross winds, I believe - but in essence, an unstable pattern 'up high'.
