Was strange....

..... not having the Internet. But was kind of nice, too. Got some reading done, listened to the radio and went to bed early and slept good for a change!

This was the temp when I put the gang in for the night:

The lamp has a 100w bulb it. It helps to keep the chill out. Sophia and Maude didn't know what to make of the bright light! Didn't warm it up too much though, because the next morning the water in the coop was frozen.

Charlie and one of the girls getting a drink of water"

Laverne, Maude, Shirley and Charlie  Sophia was getting a drink:

Looks odd to see a light shining in the darkness!

  1. Sheesh, had some trouble posting this, but here we go again.

Perhaps you could try something like this:

    http://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-300-Watt-Incandescent-Brooder-Clamp-Light-HD-303PDQ/204684496

This will direct the light where it will do the most good - and not just heat the roof.

    Also, how about this:

Cuts easily with a box knife. Just score and break. Squeeze it between the joists.

Chickies will probably be OK, even in the cold, but it always makes me uncomfortable when my creatures may be cold. I am forever tossing a cover over my dog when we are on the boat - but within 10 minutes he wants out from under it!

I let the boat get pretty cold - this morning it was 49 before I turned on the heater! He tells me he likes it cold ;->

    1. Hubby was kind enough to seal all the corners and cracks of the coop this past fall so the gang wouldn't get any drafts. There is just an air vent way up on the back wall. Don't want to use the chick lamp - then it would get too hot in there for them. It's a small coop.
I remember when Mom got cold, WE had to put on a sweater!! LOL!!

  2. Are you trying to keep the entire coop warm? Or just the water?

Either way, heat bulbs do better than plain light incandescant.

Or simple heat pads work well too. 100 watts properly applied, is a lot of heat. IMproperly applied, all it does is mess up the chickens roosting instinct.

    1. I like the idea of the heat pad! But I'm afraid with so much hay in the coop it could cause a fire. The light is mainly just to keep the chill out when the temps go around 10 degrees. Charlie only lets Sophia and Maude stay next to him. Laverne and Shirley are the oldest and he scoots them all the way down the roosting bar. They would be warmer if they all stayed together! I love them, but something they are not to bright! Thanks for stopping by and commenting! :o)
