Stuff you don't think about...

... The sewing machine! No, Singer didn't invent it!

The video is almost a half hour long, but worth every minute of it and you'll never take threading your machine for grated again! (and just imagine what  simple levers, cams and gears can do)!

I had one exactly like this when I was a very little girl:

  1. Smile, I still have mine in the original box, because that is how my mother taught me to store it. I need to take it to the sewing machine mechanic. Get it cleaned and the screw that holds the needle in replaced.

    1. How wonderful to still have that treasure! Lucky you! :o) I took mine apart when I was older to see how it worked :o(

    2. My youngest sister did that with the tension on Mom's 401a Singer. Why I still have a younger sister is a mystery. It took several years until Mom found a mechanic who could put it back together.

  2. Your poor sister! Sewing machine repairmen are few and far between just like the milkman!

  3. I found out last weekend that if you carelessly thread the upper part, the resulting stitching is quite interesting in the bad way.

    2. I'll remember that! I've created that even on my totally mechanical LZ machine! Gotta watch the tension!

  4. So did I! It was a rugged little machine and heavy enough so turning the crank kept it steady. Or at least that is my memory of it. Could be that it clamped onto the table in some way. When I was 16 my Mumma bought a 'modern' Singer and my little sewing machine was given to a younger cousin (who trashed it.. Oh well...) I 'learned' something of sewing when I was a child. I wish I had a picture of that little marvel. My folks were working class and had little money to spare, but they always found something really nice for me at Christmas. I have never seen one since and I have looked a bit. Thanks for putting up the pic!

I have a White treadle: cabinet beat up, but the machine is perfect - made many an item on that machine. Sadly, she'll be in storage for a few years until I come back to land - if I come back to land! (will mention that I also have a Bernina 1020, and a Sailrite LZ for canvas work ;-> I like to sew.)

Sadly, home sewing is becoming a lost art. I have not met a young woman who knows a thing about it now. Ah well, passing era!

    1. Sewing is so relaxing - I really should do more of it. It was mandatory in grammar school. We had to make our graduation dresses. I dislike Dotted Swiss material to this very day....
