When I went to let the gang out for breakfast yesterday morning, only three of them came out. Not unusual as sometimes one of the girls will be in the nest box.
Peeked inside the coop and there was Sophia. Dead on the floor. Damn! She was so sweet and liked to be held and petted more than the others. She's the one that made that funny egg, but only laid one more after that, but seemed just fine otherwise.
Hubby dug a hole and we buried her along the stone wall in the back. I hate when I lose one - I always wonder if I did something wrong.
Now there is only Charlie, Laverne and Maude left. I really don't know if I'm going to get any more.
Maybe it's time for goldfish.......
Sophia
Sorry to hear. :-(
ReplyDeleteThanks Irish. She was a good little hen.
DeleteSorry you lost your feathery little friend. We all grow fond of our critters.
ReplyDeleteSo true, Gorges. She was only a chicken, but I did enjoy having her.
DeleteI'm so sorry.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Vickie. She would always follow me around like a puppy. I'll miss her.
DeleteSad news, sorry to hear that.
ReplyDeleteCharlie is going to miss her - that's for sure. She was his favorite.
DeleteCoopville just got a little smaller. I am sorry for your loss. Goldfish are never as much fun.
ReplyDeleteThanks, BW. The only good thing about goldfish is you don't have to go out in rotten weather to take care of them!
DeleteOh NO!
ReplyDeleteMine usually gave an indication something was going on before they died. One, my fav just keeled over one day. You're so well set up for keeping chickens, maybe you should make a segregated pen/yard and buy some baby chicks for a back-up.
((HUGS!!))
She was fine, BC - running and scratching around. She just didn't lay eggs anymore even though she was only a year old. I really didn't care about that. Guess her innards were defective from the get go. You just never know with them.
DeleteVery sorry to read about Sophie.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'll miss her jumping up and down for her Cheerios treats -
DeleteShe was funny!
Well ya gotta admit, CM - that bunch lead pretty good lives as far as chickens go! Poor thing...I'm sorry for the loss. For stupid, foolish birds - they sure tend to take a piece of you with them when they go.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Glen. They really are just silly chickens, but I get so attached to them. Each one has a different personality. Charlie is still calling for her. Maude keeps looking in the coop. Only Laverne doesn't seem to mind - more food for her!
DeleteYou treat your Chickies like I treat my dog... (I have friends that want to come back as one of my dogs if they die ;->) You did nothing wrong, but you already know that, just a case of second-guessing what you 'might have done'.
ReplyDeleteCheerio treats, forsooth! Lucky little Chick, was Sophia...
I am really sorry you lost her, I have enjoyed the stories of Sophia and know that your heart aches... I wish you peace.
Cap'n Jan
Thank you Cap'n Jan. I know there was nothing I could have done - sometimes chickens do that. They are really complicated little creatures on the inside and often just up and die. She did have a good life, though. I'm glad she lived here in Coopville and I had the chance to spoil her.
DeleteI am sorry, I have been travelling all week and just read about Sophia. I am so sorry you lost a sweet friend.
ReplyDeleteGlad you are home safe and sound! She was such a dopey looking little hen - I will miss her. There is a poultry show in two weeks - maybe I'll get some more hens. Not for me, of course - but for Charlie. :o)
