Chickens are full of surprises!

They really are! When they get locked up for the night, there is a special order that Charlie puts them in on the roosting bar. If they are not in line, he bites their feet until they move. Shirley must stay by the hatch door. Laverne is next to her. At the other end of the bar, (far away from L&S)  Sophia and Maude are right next to Charlie. He stays next to the big coop door.

When I let them out in the morning, Charlie chases everyone out into the pen. He lets Maude and Sophia eat, then Laverne and Shirley. He eats last. Then he decides who is going to get his attention first - Maude and/or Sophia. He never bothers with Laverne or Shirley. I guess he knows what hen will proved offspring.

M&S lay eggs every day. Laverne only once in a great, great while. I cannot even remember the last time when Shirley did.

Anyhooo, when I let them out of the pen last week, Charlie chased poor Shirley all over the yard and did what roosters normally do. She squawked and squawked. She never expected that to happen again! Neither did I! She ran under the dek and stayed there until it was time to go back in the pen.

Two days later these were found in the nest box on 12/16:

(That must have hurt - poor Shirley!)

 And on the 17th:

 

The shells were thin on Shirley's eggs, but boy, they sure were good!
