This is mostly what she wants to do when she comes out of the coop - sit in the corner snuggled in a pile of hay. She's not egg bound, and her eyes are clear. Her comb is bright and not flopped over. She's not too hungry, but is drinking her water. Her crop isn't clogged up but she did have little bit of a runny butt. I don't know what is wrong with her. I picked her up and while holding her and checked for bugs and lumps. Checked her poop for worms. Nothing.
Shirley came over to see what was going on, but Lucy just ignored her.
She still hops up on the roost bar at night and will peck at Laverne and Shirley if they try to take her spot, so she's strong enough to do that.
I guess she's just getting old.
How old is Lucy? Poor thing. Maybe she is content in her own way?
ReplyDeleteLucy will be 5. She's the last one left of the 6 chicks I started out with in 2010. I'll get some pullets in the Spring to keep Charlie happy. Laverne and Shirley are going to be busy until then!
DeleteMaybe the cold is getting her down.

I think so, too. And it is very windy - it's gusting up to 25mph and with the cold (26) none of them wanted to come out of the pen. They are all hiding behind the plastic and I'm just glad none of them are in a full molt. Maybe it will warm up a bit tomorrow.
DeleteMy Hendrika was 5 when she started acting that way too...then she died. Waaaaaaa!

Evil Ethel went the same way - I think their hearts just give out. I still miss her...sniff, sniff.
DeleteYeah, I think so too. I loved Hendrika and her sister, Henrietta more than any of the other chickens. They both just seemed to fade and fade until they just keeled over and out. I buried them...sniff, sniff.

Some are so special. . I had a rooster, "Tubs" who was like a puppy. He followed me everywhere and loved to be held. Unfortunately, he was so darn fat & heavy he broke his leg and had to be put down.
DeleteCUTE!! When I was a kid in the 1950's, I had a pet banty rooster...he followed me to school one morning. I had to go to the admin. office and tell them I had to take my chicky home...I had him under my arm, and I wondered why the staff was all laughing.
DeleteChickens are special friends.

Some roosters are so nice! Others - not so much! Charlie isn't too bad, but nothing like Tubs was.
DeleteI was thinking she may be joining her sde kick soon but hated to say it for your sake...I'm sorry :((
ReplyDeleteNot a problem, Mamahen. Lucy never really became friendly with Laverne & Shirley. When Lucy does go, they won't even notice. L & S don't like to be picked up and held. They just like to eat. I hope the next ones I get will have fun personalities. Every one sure is different!
DeleteMy two sister hens were very close, walked around with each other always. When Henrietta was going down and then out, Hendrika was just lost. It wasn't very long before she began to lose interest in her world and faded out too.

Know what you mean - Lucy stayed by Ethel's side until I put her in the house. She kept looking for her for a long time.
