There is a protective coating on every egg called "bloom" and that prevents air from penetrating the shell.
If you wash your eggs right away, the bloom is removed and your eggs will begin to loose their freshness. Some prefer to wash the eggs as soon as they are collected then wipe each one with a thin coat of vegetable oil before putting them in the fridge. I've read that heavily coated eggs can be stored in a cool place for up to two months.
(Don't think I'd want to try it though)!
Of course if there is 'dirt' and feathers stuck on mine, they get washed and are used before the others.
